How to Choose A Pickleball Paddle
Everything You Need to Know
When buying a pickleball paddle, making sure the right paddle for you might seem overwhelming. To help you, here’s some information on pickleball paddles and which paddle may be best suited for you. Choosing the right pickleball paddle can not only affect your gameplay but also the physical strain you may feel after a game. Three aspects to consider when buying your pickleball paddle are weight, size and composition.

Weight & Size: How Heavy Should My Pickleball Paddle Be?
Although the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) rulebook does not have any specific restrictions on paddle weights, most weigh between 6 to 14 ounces. A paddle's weight changes and affects your control, power and spin during play. It will also affect how you feel physically after your game. A lighter paddle will give you more control but less power, however, a heavier paddle will provide you with more power, but less control. Of course the heavier a paddle is, the greater the physical toll and strain is on your body.

USAPA regulations for Pickleball paddle size, state that; "The combined length and width, including any edge guard and butt cap, shall not exceed 24 inches (60.96 cm). The paddle length cannot exceed 17 inches (43.18 cm). There is no restriction on paddle thickness"
Composition: What Should My Pickleball Paddle Be Constructed From?

According to the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) rulebook; "The paddle shall be made of rigid, non-compressible material meeting the criteria located on the USA PICKLEBALL website." https://usapickleball.org
Pickleball paddles are usually fabricated out of either wood or composite material.
Heavier paddles are usually made from wood. Most of the time, they are the least expensive options and generally purchased by families interested in getting to know the sport and use them for recreational purposes. Wood paddles are a great way to get started playing pickleball and offer fantastic value.

Composite paddles are a made from a carbon fiber material. These composite paddles are lightweight thus offering control, accuracy and comfort. These paddles tend to be more expensive than wood paddles, however the benefits from using composite paddles are noticeable from your 1st swing. Composite paddles come in many sizes and weights.
At the end of the day, choosing the right paddle comes down to your budget, skill level, comfort and design preference.
